“Tell me why! I don’t like Christmas lights…” Sir Bob Geldof Post 9 from #NC10

Sir Bob on stage

This could be the potentially the most bizarre post I have ever written and considering what some of the posts are about it even surprises me to say that. So anyway a couple of weeks ago we were asked by the SSAT to help pilot a new website all about global citizens which was launched last week at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust National Conference. You can view the site here:

www.ssatrust.org.uk/globalcitizens

So some of our students started working on the website by coming up with one idea that may change the world and posting information about it on the site. You can see more details on the site and how it works in another blog post 10.

Our students were thrilled when they were contacted to come to Birmingham and meet with Sir Bob and four other students from two other schools to discuss their ideas and launch the site on the stage at the conference. You can see on the video clip below the girls from our school explaining their concept although the audio is not that clear:

There idea is basically to help raise awareness of how much energy/electricity is used all around the country for Christmas lights and how much money it costs. Their idea is to get young people in all towns all over the UK to do a fundraising activity when their local town switches on their Christmas lights by on the opening night generating the electricity by people power through exercise bikes and rowing machines etc. The money saved on the opening night and the other fundraising money collected as part of the event will then be used for children who are in local hospitals over the Christmas period. Now I would appreciate your thoughts on this as an idea – what do you think? As Bob didn’t really like it – in fact he didn’t think it could work or even scientifically work with regards to generating electricity from an exercise bike. At this point I did interrupt the discussions as a science teacher to confirm that it is possible although it didn’t go down very well!

When he then appeared on stage later he referred back to the Christmas lights on this video clip:

The girls were pleased to meet him and enjoyed the experience and are now keen to prove to him that it can work so watch this space as we will be creating a very special video on this topic very soon before Christmas.

The schools work with global citizens was once again demonstrated not just for this work but also after Sir Bob talked the school were highly commended in the SSAT’s I-Net Award for our international work.
