What is Worldwide International Schools Day?
This is an opportunity for all schools around the world to celebrate their internationalism. It is a great chance for the children, staff and parents to explore the cultural diversity of their school community through recognising their own individual national identities and sharing these with their whole school community.
What is the purpose?
In a rapidly changing global landscape, young people are growing up in a time when global mobility is happening. New global values are establishing themselves through education, this is an opportunity for true world citizenship to be developed in our young people. Through celebrating children’s national differences then perhaps a common international culture can be developed through also celebrating the internationalism of your community.
How can you or your school take part?
Any school around the world can take part and it doesn’t cost anything. How can we celebrate?
We are asking all schools that take part to release one single white balloon with the schools information attached to it as a symbol of unity for all young people no matter what nationality.
In addition you can celebrate in whatever way you want to, here are some ideas:
· There are 29 different classes throughout the school, each class could represent one country, perhaps drawn out of a hat soon and the each class could prepare material/resources/products based on the country and things like facts, food, songs/music, poetry/stories, clothes/costumes, religion, art, flags etc.
· International themed lessons could run all day or for a couple of weeks up to it with an international focus. Students then showcase their work in the afternoon and evening to parents.
· Have a parade/procession
· Students and teachers dress in their own national dress or traditional costumes
· Food stalls for food tasting or selling food at breaks and lunchtimes
· Performances of national dances
· Fundraising through activities – bring and buy sale, international quiz, raffle etc
· Each tutor group produces a presentation or video about their country
· A national dress cat walk fashion parade
· Booklet of poems on the international theme could be published and sold to raise money
· A calendar printed and sold to raise money
· Connecting to other international schools and students during the day through Skype
· International themed assemblies
· Hello/welcome notices in all classrooms from different countries
· International music stage
· Students could spend the day decorating classrooms in international themes
