#NC11 PART 6 – Lord Puttnam

The importance of nurturing creativity and collaboration

It was good to hear Lord Puttnam challenges Michael Gove and the UK government to consider their current view of educational practice.

Lord Puttnam talked about when Gove speaks about Education he never ever ever has mentioned technology and it’s role in it. Does he just see technology as a passing peculiarity of our times? Why is there a ‘conscious avoidance’ of it? Lord Puttnam said that hopefully he doesn’t and I am sure he doesn’t.

There is a need for those in positions of power within education to stop looking back and start looking forward.

Lord Puttnam went on to talk about the power and potential of voice recognition in education from the most recent releases from major companies around the world.

I liked what he said when kids will grown up in a world of voice recognition but we want to ignore this in favour for victorian values.

Why has this gulf, this disparity between the lecture halls to the classroom with regarding technology been created and exists?

We need to know more about the learning potential of all young people? Technology has a role in this.

Lord Puttnam went onto champion computing science in schools and education, a desperate need to feed the economy with games designers and programmers. He went on to discuss the Next Gen report which if you haven’t read yet then please do.

Wonder if Mr Gove is listening and what his response will be in a few hours? Watch this space…

I loved this talk and have huge respect for Lord Puttnam especially with his championing of the Teaching Awards, I have seen the impact that these awards have had on teachers and young people, which I thank him for.
