It’s all ‘Appening at saltash.net!

I am extremely excited to have a special guest blog post written by my boss Headteacher Isobel Bryce:

Students at saltash.net community school will be returning from their summer break this week to find many exciting developments taking place to enrich their learning opportunities. One of the initiatives, about to be launched on Thursday 8th September, is an app that has been designed by two 16 year old saltash.net students to assist with organisation, planning and homework.

Ryan King and Ethan Pearce have spent 18 months designing and creating the saltash.net Etable App having been inspired originally by a Media Studies Assignment and further suggestions and ideas from their ICT and Business Studies Teacher, Mr James Edwards. After a huge amount of work and effort, undertaken alongside their GCSE examinations, Ryan and Ethan’s Etable App will go live on Apple’s iTunes store this Thursday, 8th September. In addition to the ITunes app, the students have also developed an app for mobile phones and tablets on Google’s Android platform.

saltash.net Etable enables both teachers and students to create their own, personalised one week or two week timetables. There is also plenty of room to add all sorts of supportive notes and information about homework and tasks set. It will be just as useful for teachers planning their lessons as it will be for students across the age range to organise their school work. The App costs just £0.69 to download, of which £0.42 will be going to the school to reinvest in resources for its students.

Headteacher, Isobel Bryce said, ‘I am so pleased that all of Ryan and Ethan’s hard work has come to fruition. The fact that this is one of the first Apps in the UK, designed by students, to appear in the ITunes store makes what these young people have achieved even more special! I am sure it will be a great asset for students of all ages and I will certainly be buying my copy on Thursday.”

Ryan added, “I am excited and feel proud of what we have achieved. At one point I didn’t think we would get this far, as we had a number of setbacks, but I am really pleased we kept going and now, with the app in an online store in front of more than 20 million users, I think the App could go global.”

Anyone wanting further information about the App can go to the App site: Http://etable.gromfrog.com. They can also follow Ryan and Ethan on twitter on @gromfrog and @ethanthebean.

There doesn’t appear to many apps like this around so teachers and students all over the world should download it and use it.
