Leading2Learn Learning2Lead – Week #2

"Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile." –Vince Lombardi

As opposed to the phrase or possibly it could be a song ‘born to lead’. The question I was asked by a middle leader recently was about whether or not your leadership style can enhance your leadership ability?

What do you think?

For any of you who have completed courses on leadership and management then you must have looked at leadership styles and asked to reflect on what leadership styles you have or even you had to complete a leadership style exercise. However does understanding your strengths and style as a leader help improve the way you lead?

I remember listening to John West-Burnham once a couple of years ago talking about how leaders don’t often realise the influence of their own style/personality on those around them.

I believe that those exceptional leaders are the ones who are in touch with their own abilities, they truly have a real insight to their strengths and areas to develop, furthermore they really understand how these strengths and ‘weaknesses’ can influence others on a daily basis. I believe that by spending time reflecting on your own style and leadership powers then you become a much better leader for it.

What do you think? Do you have any good tests or questionnaires that you use to help explore this?
